My recent holiday in the charming town of Palazzo Arceidi, located an hour from Catania airport, was amazing, from August 2nd to 16th, I enjoyed my friend’s villa, the warm sun, beautiful scenery, and the Sicilian cuisine.

However, the journey back home was anything but smooth.

The eruption that peaked around my departure date of 16th August 2026 was the worst airport disruption that the region has seen in over two decades. The airport at Catania was completely coated in black thick volcanic ash and hundreds of flights were cancelled.

Upon getting dropped back to Catania airport on 16th August, I encountered quite an ordeal as eventually my flight appeared from delayed to cancelled and the Jet 2 staff explained as I was flight only, I could just book a taxi and hotel for the evening.  They tried most days to get a flight out but on day 3 messaged to say a 4-hour coach journey to Trapani airport, was necessary.

Despite the long trip, I was so grateful for the support I received from Jet2. They ensured that I was accommodated in decent hotels during the delay and provided daily expenses for taxis and meals, allowing me to manage somewhat comfortably under the circumstances.

Jet2's team worked tirelessly to address the plight of stranded passengers like me. Their assistance greatly eased the stress of the situation, showing that they genuinely care about their customers, even in less-than-ideal scenarios.  Their messaging was excellent and their call centre was manned 24/7.

Despite the frustrations of a disrupted journey, I so appreciate the efforts made by Jet2 to look after me and other affected travellers. The unscheduled flight to return home, albeit without food or drinks, was a testament to their commitment to getting us back despite the series of unfortunate events that unfolded.

In conclusion, natural disasters and other situations may occur that throw you off your planned journey.  Communication is key and I feel Jet 2 need applauding for this.  It could not have been easy with so many thousands of passengers, but they kept us up to date with the very latest information, made us feel safe whilst stranded and provided the necessary hotel and daily expenses coverage.
